The second half of property taxes will be due on Friday, February 10, 2012 for the fiscal year July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. Please mark your calendars. The interest rate on unpaid taxes is 7%.

Municipal Election Nomination Papers Available

Nomination papers will be available after December 13th at the town office for the March 8, 2011 Municipal Election. The deadline for filing papers is on or before 4:30 p.m. Friday, January 21, 2011. At least 25, but no more than 100 signatures of Orono voters are required to have a name placed on the ballot.

There are two 3-year terms available on Town Council and two 3-year terms available on the Orono RSU#26 Board.

Councilors whose terms will expire are Geoffrey Gordon and Cynthia Mehnert. The Orono RSU#26 members whose terms will expire are Leo Kenney and Geoffrey Wingard.

Nomination papers will be available after December 19th at the town office for the March 13, 2012 Municipal Election. The deadline for filing papers is on or before 4:30 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012. At least 25, but no more than 100 signatures of Orono voters are required to have a name placed on the ballot.

There are three 3-year terms available on Town Council and two 3-year terms and one 2-year term available on the Orono RSU#26 Board.

Councilors whose terms will expire are Lianne Harris, Thomas Perry and Judith Sullivan. The Orono RSU#26 members whose terms will expire are Alison Mitchell and Frances Mary Neubauer. The 2-year term vacancy is a result of James Bird’s resignation.

Property tax bills were mailed out the end of August. The first-half of the taxes are due on Friday, September 23, 2011 and the second-half will be due Friday, February 10, 2012.

Come meet the Candidates for Orono Town Council and School Board at Candidates’ Night, Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 59 Main Street, Orono.

Your attendance is important: the Town Councilors and School Board members approve the spending of your tax dollars for schools, snow plowing, trash removal, police & fire protection, housing code enforcement, zoning, etc. Come March 1^st to ask questions and get to know the candidates.

Municipal Election, Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

ALL VOTING will be held at the Municipal Building, Council Chambers, 59 Main Street. Voting hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There are five candidates running for two 3-year terms on the Town Council. The candidates are Andrew Gavett, III, Geoffrey Gordon, Cynthia Mehnert, Daniel LaPointe and Kathleen Walton.

Voters will be electing two members to the RSU#26 Board for 3-year terms. The RSU#26 Board candidates are James Bird, Lisa Buck and Geoffrey Wingard.

Absentee ballots are available by calling the Town Office at 866-2556 or coming in to the office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Registrar of Voters will be in Open Session on the following dates and times in the Orono Town Office, for the purpose of registering and enrolling new voters and to correct the voting list for the March 8, 2011 Municipal Election: March 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Dog Licenses

Renew by January 31, 2011 to avoid a $25 penalty.The fee for a spayed or neutered dog is $6.00 and $11.00 for an unaltered dog.

Maine Law requires that all dogs six months of age or older be licensed in the municipality where their owners reside. Dog licenses for the year 2011 are now available at the town office. All dogs must be licensed before January 31st.
