No sherpas, no radios, no oxygen, up a never-before-attempted route! In 1988, Ed Webster did it. Join us for this riveting lecture and breathtaking slideshow.
ED WEBSTER grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts and now lives in Harpswell, Maine. A veteran of seven Himalayan expeditions and pioneer of many new rock climbs of extreme difficulty, he is one of America’s best-known rock climbers and Himalayan mountaineers. The hardest of all his climbs is the subject of his presentation: his fabled first ascent of a brand new route up Mt. Everest. Up the peak’s remote and dangerous Kangshung East Face in Tibet as part of an international 4-man team in 1988, without the norms of oxygen bottles and radios, or even any Sherpa assistance.
Webster’s 1988 Mt. Everest New Route has been hailed as “The Last of the Great Everest Expeditions” and among the most audacious mountaineering feats of all time.
He recently returned from his first Expedition to Antarctica.

For this year's Fall Festival with UMaine's Greek Life, the Orono Public Library is in cahoots with the town's "Trunk or Treat" event downtown on Mill Street. "Check out our feet" in the parklet with autumn stories (spooky or not!) and the return of our Library Fortune Teller! In the alley next to us will be games, face painting, pumpkin decorating and crafts hosted by UMaine students who have dared to come back for another holiday of collaborating! Wear your costumes if you must, have a little dinner downtown, and find out what is special about our feet. Heh, heh... BOO!
