- Where does the glass go?
Glass will be separated from the waste stream, cleaned and then ground into a grit suitable for use as an alternative daily cover for landfills (read more about why landfills use daily cover materials here: https://www.waste360.

- Where does the plastic go?
#1 and #2 plastics will be recovered from the recycling stream, bundled and sold on the commodity recycling market. #3-#7 plastics will be recovered from the waste stream, shredded and then compacted into bricks suitable for burning in biomass fuel boilers.
- Who is picking up my trash and recycling and will my day change?
The Town of Orono has contracted with Pine Tree Waste to do the curbside collection of trash and recycling. There will not be any changes to the scheduled pickup days.
- When does the new recycling vendor start?
Coastal Resources of Maine will begin processing the Town of Orono's trash and recycling on a full-time basis on July 1, 2019. However, prior to that date, Coastal Resources will be taking trial loads of trash and recycling so residents should begin changing their recycling habits starting immediately.
- What day is my trash and recycling collected?
For the streets west of Main Street, from Gardner Road to Bennoch Road, trash pick-up is Thursdays.
For both sides of Main Street and all streets east of Main, including everything north of the Stillwater River (College Avenue, Webster side), trash pick-up is Fridays.
Recycling occurs on every other week.
On the following holidays, trash pick-up is delayed by one day (except when the holiday falls on the weekend): New Year's, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
- Do I still need to clean jars & containers?
Anything placed in a recycling bin (#1 & #2 plastics, aluminum cans) should be clean. Anything placed in the trash (glass, #3-#7 plastic) will be cleaned by the recovery process at Coastal Resources of Maine.
- Can I still put my recycling in bags?
You may still put your recycling in clear plastic bags for curbside collection.

...can it go to the LANDFILL?
Landfill permits can be purchased at the Town Office. Yard waste is free to drop off at Landfill, but a permit is required.

Please have all items in containers and on your curb by 7am.
The Town of Orono will be collecting recycled materials every other week, on your trash day, Thursday or Friday. As always, be sure to have your items placed curbside by 7:00 am on your collection day.
